Under the stewardship of Chief Minister Mr. Bhagwant Singh Mann two pronged strategy has been adopted under "Yuddh Nasheyan Viruddh" to fight against the drug menace by working towards de-addiction and arresting the drug peddlers. Every village will soon have 15 member committee, de-addiction center and OOAT clinic Narcotics Anonymous Support Groups.
Dr. Balbir Singh, the Punjab Health Minister said during his visit to Barnala de-addiction center and rehabilitation center under government's initiative Yuddh Nasheyan Viruddh (The War Against Drugs). He added that not limiting itself to curbing the drug menace, Punjab government has gone a step ahead and is ensuring rehabilitation of the addicts to put them on path of sobriety as well as to ensure that they find their roots back into the society.
Warning the drug peddlers of state to stop drug trading lest they want to find themselves behind the bars or else leave the state. He added that women addicts will be accorded separate wards so that they could be treated with dignity.
Talking to the media he said that a 15 member committee will be constituted in every village whose president will be the woman panchayat member and ASHA worker will be the member secretary. These will be known as Narcotics Anonymous Support Groups. This committee shall prove instrumental in resolving smaller physical ailments, drug de-addiction and promote healthy lifestyle. Similarly, every drug de-addiction center, OOAT clinic and mohallas will have support groups wherein the reformed addicts will serve as source of inspiration. The former addicts, who are on path of sobriety, will serve as beacon of hope and motivate addicts to shun the drugs.
Dr Balbir Singh added that the campaign has evoked positive response from every quarter of the society and in forthcoming 3 to 4 months, drugs will be wiped off the state. The Minister also convened a meeting with the operators of private de-addiction centers. He strictly warned them from promoting drugs in the garb of de-addiction center. If the private operators shirked their responsibilities, they would be booked under law.
The Health Minister took stock of de-addiction center being run at civil hospital Barnala and the rehabilitation center as well. He directed that both the institutes should be completely operational.
