Step aimed to disseminate awareness against drug menace under State Government’s Sampark programme
Police focuses on three pronged strategy of prevention, enforcement and rehabilitation to curb drug menace
Hoshiarpur, January 9: After launching mission ‘Hoshiyar’ to curb the menace of drugs a few days ago, the District Police on Thursday kick-started the sub-divisional sports events to engage the youngsters towards different sports as well as further spreading awareness against the menace.
Giving details about the initiative, Hoshiarpur SSP Surendra Lamba said that these sports events were aimed at promoting sports amongst youngsters so as to channelise their energy in a positive manner. He said that the endeavour is a part of ‘sampark’ programme to combat with the drug abuse besides bringing the addicts to main stream and taking strict action against drug peddlers.
The SSP pointed out that these sports events included basketball, volleyball, football and athletics would take place in all seven sub-divisions, where more than 1,500 youngsters participating in different games. He said the promotion of sports would surely give a constructive message against the menace. By embracing sports of their choice, the SSP said that they could not only excel but also become inspiration for others. He said that after sub-divisional level sports events, the district level tourney will be held. He said a total of 176 teams were being participated, with the winning teams advancing to compete in district-level competitions.
Surendra Lamba highlighted that these events are organized by the district police as part of their anti-drug awareness campaign. He noted that the Superintendents of Police (SPs), Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSPs), and Station House Officers (SHOs) had already been informed teams at their respective levels for the events so as to ensure healthy competitions.
SSP Lamba also urged the community to provide information about drug peddlers and addicts to assist in the fight against drug abuse. He said that the district police was also focusing on three pronged strategy including preventing, enforcement and rehabilitation through experts at district level rehabilitation centre. He said that people should come forward to join hands with police for this noble cause so that the youngsters could be wean away from drugs and requisite action against those indulged in this malpractice of selling and smuggling drugs.
Pertinently, the teams at police station level included six in Garhshankar & Talwara, 10 in Mahilpur, eight in Chabbewal, 12 in Mehtiana, 10 each in Bullowal and Hoshiarpur city, 32 in Sadar, 20 in Model Town, 12 in Haryana, eight each in Gardhiwala, Mukerian & Hajipur, 14 in Tanda abd 12 in Dasuya.
