- Large Turnout of Farmers at Kissan Mela at Krishi Vigyan Kendra
Patiala, March 25:
- A Kissan Mela was organized at the Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Rauni, Patiala, under the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU). The event saw a significant participation of farmers. Dr. Sukhpal Singh, Chairman of the Punjab State Farmers and Farm Workers Commission, Punjab Government, was the chief guest, while Dr. Satbir Singh Gosal, Vice Chancellor of PAU, presided over the event. Dr. Davinder Singh Cheema, a member of the PAU Management Board, attended as a special guest.
Addressing the farmers, Dr. Sukhpal Singh emphasized that agriculture is the backbone of Punjab, with its fertile soil, hardworking farmers, and dedicated agricultural scientists. He acknowledged that while the global economy faces challenges in the industrial and service sectors, the potential for growth in agriculture remains constant. Dr. Singh highlighted the need for farmers to adopt cooperative farming to enhance productivity and profits, given the small landholdings in Punjab.
- In his presidential address, Dr. Satbir Singh Gosal appreciated the overwhelming participation, noting it as a testament to the trust farmers have in PAU. He urged farmers to reduce unnecessary farming expenses and adopt the new techniques recommended by the university. Stressing water conservation, he advised against the excessive use of chemical fertilizers and promoted organic alternatives. He also encouraged farmers to avoid burning crop residue and adopt sustainable practices using advanced technology like the combine drill with an SMS attachment.
- The mela also featured exhibitions showcasing improved crop varieties and new agricultural techniques developed by PAU. Dr. Ajmer Singh Dhatt, Director of Research at PAU, shared that the university has recommended 971 crop varieties, with several recognized at the national level. Dr. Davinder Singh Cheema suggested diversifying from the wheat-paddy cycle and adopting vegetable cultivation using drip irrigation to save water.
- Several progressive farmers were honored for their innovative practices in beekeeping, strawberry cultivation, horticulture, and crop residue management. Dr. Tejinder Singh Riar encouraged farmers to connect with PAU’s digital platforms, weekly Facebook live sessions, and YouTube channels for the latest agricultural updates.
- The Kissan Mela successfully bridged the gap between researchers and farmers, promoting modern, cost-effective, and sustainable agricultural practices.
