Administration observes World Down Syndrome Day
DC Himanshu Jain felicitates 16 inspiring individuals
Ludhiana, March 21
On the occasion of World Down Syndrome Day today, the district administration under the UMEED project (Uplifting Mission for Education and Empowerment of Divyangjans) in collaboration with leading NGOs and social groups, celebrated the strength, achievements, and determination of 16 extraordinary individuals with down syndrome.
Deputy Commissioner Himanshu Jain presided over the event and dedicated his first day in office time to this noble cause. He felicitated 16 individuals with Down syndrome who have overcome difficulties and scaled new heights in fields like sports, art, entrepreneurship, academics, and community service.
Jain said that the district administration was making all-out efforts for the betterment of the specially-abled persons and called them an integral part of society. He said that every step would be taken to assist specially-abled persons to make them able to earn their livelihood.
The honorees represented various NGOs including Ashirwaad, Darpan Autism Centre, Nirdosh School, Ek Prayas, and CityNeeds.

Later, DDF Ludhiana Ambar Bandopadhyay also briefed the Deputy Commissioner on Project UMEED, a new initiative by the district administration under the Red Cross Society aimed at the welfare and empowerment of physically and mentally challenged individuals.
On the occasion, Dr. Neelam Sodhi, Sanam Mehra from NGO Ashirwaad, Kitty Bakshi, HM Singh from Nirdosh, Niranjan, Ashok from Darpan Autism Centre, Sameera Bector from Ek Prayas, Maneet Dewan from CityNeeds, Red Cross Secretary Navneet Joshi and others were also present.
